Rail-fan Pictures at Durham

When the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts moved from Hanover to Durham it only took a matter of hours for the Boston and Maine Railroad to transfer Dean Charles Pettee, his faculty, their families, and everything except the buildings themselves. They arrived at a fairly new campus with three buildings on one side of the rails and two on the other.

In 1912 it was decided that they should persuade the B&M to move the rails north of town outside of the campus area. The station chosen for the new alignment would be the one built in Lynn Massachusetts as the North Atlantic and Eastern Railroads East Lynn Station on the Marblehead Branch in 1896. It was taken down and the salvageable parts were moved to the current location and reassembled there.

As the college expanded it eventually reached the railroad, bought the station at the end of B&M passenger service, and also crossed over the rails. The rails now once again run through the middle of the campus, with most of the academic buildings on the south side and the athletic facilities on the north side.
